First Selectwoman: “Westport will become a mask optional community”

Westport First Selectwoman Jennifer Tooker:

First Selectwoman Jennifer Tooker announced today that, in collaboration with the COVID-19 Emergency Management Team, Westport will become a mask optional community effective February 28, 2022.

Masks may still be required in other locations outside the municipal authority. They include healthcare facilities, facilities housing vulnerable populations, public and private transit, and correctional facilities. Additionally, some Westport establishments and locations may continue to maintain a full mask policy.

First Selectwoman Tooker explained, “For ease of implementation, the date was determined to correspond with the State of Connecticut and Westport Public Schools Superintendent Tom Scarice’s announcements, as well as the Board of Education’s anticipated decision, to lift the mask mandate in Westport public school buildings on February 28. (https://www.westportps.org/district/administrators-central-office/superintendent/superintendents-updates) We are comfortable and confident that requiring masks in municipal buildings is no longer a necessity, with the exceptions noted. Certainly, there are those who will continue to wear a mask in certain circumstances, and we respect and encourage that personal choice.”

“I am very proud to be leading this resilient community,” she continued. “Since early 2020, we have all  had to navigate the many phases of COVID. Being mask optional is an encouraging development in yet another phase that we will navigate together.”
