High school fencers from around the State gathered at North Haven High School yesterday for the State Championships of fencing. For the first time: a team of Staples kids joined them after becoming a team just this school year. However new, by the end of the day - the team would be named State Champions in a triumphant show of hard work and training.

The team of Wreckers and Fairfield Fencing Academy students beat North Haven 5-1 in Round One, then continued to beat the Hopkins School team 5-2 in Round Two, and were ultimately made victors after beating Fairfield Warde High School with a narrow win of 5-4 in the final round. Junior Gleb Symoichev took on the current State Champion Matthew Brier during the second round, leading to the 5-2 score.
