Westport’s “Gloria” Breaks Apart during Overnight Storm

Gloria, a former oyster boat that calls the mudflats of Gray’s Creek “home”, could be found broken apart this evening after last night’s storms and extreme high tides. The boat has remained orphaned in the creek along Longshore since 2014 - when its creator and oysterman Alan Sterling died. The vessel had been a part of the Westport shoreline for decades, with Sterling often seen working under the small wooden canopy from the beaches of Longshore and Compo Basin. The boat could be seen in relatively poor repair the past few weeks, but last night’s high tides seems to have beached the handmade vessel while breaking it into two parts. The fate of the Westport landmark remains unknown. WestportLocal.com photo
