Unsightly Fish Die-off Sparks Curiosity
Residents walking along the Sound or the Saugatuck River may notice the same thing: dozens of dead fish. The fish - identified as Menhaden (also called “Bunker”) are victims of hypoxia, or low dissolved oxygen levels in the water. According to the Connecticut DEEP - hypoxia can be caused by factors such as warming of the water, pollution from runoff, or schools being too large. Although alarming to see, this process is not unusual for the environment-sensitive fish, and has been noted throughout the Northeast this year, and in years past. Waterworks Continue on Hillspoint Road
Aquarion Water Company, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Eversource, and Rondano Construction of Norwalk continued its work on the local water main under Hillspoint road this morning. The planned project began on October 5th, according to a Town of Westport Press Release, and will finish in Spring 2021. Aquarion said the work will improve local water quality and infrastructure: “The project, which will replace approximately 5,000 feet of water main, is part of an ongoing program to improve Aquarion’s water distribution system and to ensure the highest quality water. The infrastructure upgrades will also help to reduce leaks and water main breaks that can cause service interruptions.” (Aquarion Water Company)
