Staples beats Trumbull in First Football Game of the Season; 27-20
By the nine minute mark in the second quarter, Staples lead 13 to 0
By the time we reached the six minute mark Trumbull put their first touchdown on the board.
With eight minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, The lead had evaporated and Trumbull had pulled within two And opting to run instead of a point after kick, tied the game at 20-20.
But everything changed again at 17 seconds left in the game, when on an interception by Staples Charlie Howard, he ran the ball back 70 yards and scored to take back to lead and win The Wreckers season opener.
With former Staples High School Head Football Coach Marce Petroccio back on the Wreckers’ field as Trumbull High School’s new head coach, the Wreckers new head coach Adam Behrends and his team took home the win for Westport after a late-in-the-quarter 27-20 win. With Friday Night Lights back for the community, the bleachers were full of spectators as the close game took place on the field - many just happy to be back after such a long time away from the local tradition.
The field, soon to be named Coach Paul Lane Field in memorial of the late Staples educator and coach, was electric as teammates enjoyed their first season back since the start of the pandemic lockdowns. Last year’s season was scrapped after the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC) voted to cancel all contact football for the 2020-2021 school year. The call game just days away from first games for many players, making tonight’s game a victory for all players who weren’t able to compete last year against their rival schools.

Human Services Encourages Eligible Residents to Apply for Energy Assistance Program
Westport Department of Human ServicesHuman Services Director Elaine Daignault encourages income-eligible residents to apply for Connecticut’s federally-funded Energy Assistance Program (CEAP) through Westport’s Department of Human Services (DHS). Contactless applications for home heating assistance will become available starting October 1, 2021 and run through April 30, 2022.
“Qualifying residents are encouraged to complete the application process early in the season to ensure that they maximize the benefits of this essential program,” said Daignault.
Connecticut’s federally funded Energy Assistance Program (CEAP) helps low-income households pay their winter heating bills. Individuals and families qualify for CEAP based on their gross annual income and household size. For example, homes with a gross yearly income at or below 60% of the state median income ($39,027 for a family of one and $51,035 for a family of two) and liquid assets below $15K must provide all required documentation to determine eligibility. A full explanation of income guidelines, can be found on the State’s website.
Daignault added, “Westport is fortunate to have a local Warm-Up Fund, which is made possible by the community’s generosity. This fund provides another eligibility option based on area median income limits, thus offering an additional layer of support for families that are slightly over the state guidelines and may benefit from additional services through our department.”
Income-qualified households with previous CEAP applications on file will receive mailed application instructions in the coming weeks. New residents may contact Human Services for application information at (203) 341-1050 or email humansrv@westportct.gov.
After supplying the required documentation, eligibility is determined based on gross income, liquid assets, and last year’s tax return.
Residents can find additional information about Energy Assistance at Westport Energy Assistance.
