Westport EMS Volunteer Awarded the President’s Lifetime Achievement Award by President Biden

At Westport Police / EMS Headquarters, on October 13, 2021, Mr. Larry Kleinman was presented with The President’s Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his volunteer service at Westport Emergency Medical Service.

The award, presented by the Office of the President of the United States and AmeriCorps (formerly known as the Corporation for National and Community Service), recognizes a lifelong commitment to building a stronger nation through community service. 

“Larry has demonstrated his skills, abilities and compassion in thousands of 911 medical emergency calls. The community and our organization are extremely fortunate to have an exceptional and dedicated individual like Larry Kleinman available and ready to respond to emergencies and provide community education. His logged in volunteer hours vastly exceed the minimum 4,000 hours required for the President’s Lifetime Achievement Award” said Westport Volunteer Emergency Medical Service President Mike Burns. 

In addition to Mr. Kleinman, thirty-two EMS volunteers are to be awarded the 2020 President’s Volunteer Service Award (Gold, Silver, Bronze).

Westport Police and DEA hosts Drug Take Back Day on Saturday

On Saturday, October 23, 2021, from 10:00am to 2:00pm, the Westport Police Department will again partner with the United States Drug Enforcement Administration for the twenty-first National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.  The event will be held at the Westport Center for Senior Activities located at 21 Imperial Avenue.

The National Prescription Drug Take Back Day addresses a crucial public safety and public health issue.  According to the 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 9.7 million people misused prescription pain relievers, 4.9 million people misused prescription stimulants, and 5.9 million people misused prescription tranquilizers or sedatives.  The study shows that a majority of abused prescription drugs were obtained from family and friends, often from the home medicine cabinet.  The DEA’s Take Back Day events provide an opportunity for Americans to prevent drug addiction and overdose deaths.

Please note that collection sites cannot accept liquids, needles or sharps, only pills or patches. Vape pens where the batteries can be removed, can be disposed of at the drug take back.  Vape pens where batteries cannot be removed will not be accepted at the drug take back.  The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.  

Residents are also reminded that a year-round collection bin is located in the lobby of Westport police headquarters, where prescription drugs can be properly disposed of at any time rather than waiting for designated collection dates.

Last April, Americans turned in approximately 420 tons of prescription drugs at 5,060 collection sites operated by the DEA and its state and local law enforcement partners.  Please join the Westport Police Department in doing our part to help continue the success of this vital initiative.

Westport Halloween Parade Set for Wednesday, October 27th at 3:30 PM

The Westport Parks and Recreation Department, the Downtown Merchants Association and Westport P.A.L. have announced that the Annual Children’s Halloween Parade will take place on Wednesday, October 27, 2021.  Children and parents will meet at Main Street and Post Road East at 3:30 p.m. This event is for all children, especially those 8 and under.  

The parade will proceed up Main Street, turn right onto Avery Place, then turn left on Myrtle Ave to Town Hall and Veterans Green. Children may trick-or-treat along Main Street and outside the front of Town Hall.  Entertainment, refreshments and a small gift will be provided on Veterans Green across from Town Hall at 4:00 p.m.  

Please note that there will be NO PARKING on Main Street between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. during this event.
