Westport Celebrates 76th Anniversary of the United Nations

Town of Westport’s International Hospitality Committee

To mark the 76th Anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, the Town of Westport’s International Hospitality Committee with support from the UN Association of Southwestern Connecticut (UNASWCT) is conducting a ceremony on the Westport Town Hall front steps at 3:30 p.m., on Monday, October 25th.

The event is free, and the public is invited to attend. Those present must follow CT State guidelines by maintaining social distancing at all times.  

First Selectman Jim Marpe will open the program with welcoming remarks. UNASWCT President and International Hospitality Committee member Bill Hass will offer a message from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for UN Day.

President and Vice President of the Staples Model UN, Lucas Slater and Aidan Rogers will assist in raising the UN flag.

This year’s special guest is Aye Aye Thant, Westport resident and daughter of former UN Secretary-General U Thant, who will speak on the important work of the UN.

Members of the Staples High School Orphenians a cappella group will provide musical selections.

Local officials including State Representatives Jonathan Steinberg and Stephanie Thomas, State Senators Tony Hwang and Will Haskell, and Second Selectwoman Jen Tooker have been invited. 

The flags of UN member countries will be flying on the Ruth Steinkraus-Cohen Memorial Bridge in observance of United Nations Day, the anniversary of the UN's founding on October 24th, 1945.

I encourage all Westport voters to vote for Jennifer Tooker and Andrea Moore for the Westport Board of Selectmen on Nov 2.

As a former Westport PTA President at Long Lots Elementary, I am grateful for Jen and Andrea’s dedication and leadership to our public schools for more than a decade. They have both been visible and vocal in our community with leadership positions on the Selectmen Board, BOF, BOE, RTM and conservation committees etc. Each brings financial managerial careers of 20 years with sound professional planning experience.

This team has an incredible ability to really listen, understand and prioritize a balance of community concerns while managing the many partnerships required toward successful solutions. Tooker-Moore’s plan brings collaboration between the town and schools, transparency to the challenges and solutions and accountability from our many leaders across the town. This will result in ensuring our schools, parks, infrastructure, business and merchant community as well as, health and emergency services maintain the level of excellence, resources and safety we expect as a community.

I am thankful to live in a town where it’s easy to find Jen and Andrea at many events every week, have a conversation with them and develop ideas to improve our town together. #TookerMoore2021

Dr. Steven Cohen, 63, Died; “Bronx Boy”, Family Man

Steven M. Cohen, M.D., age 63, of Westport, CT passed away on October 18, 2021 at Bridgeport Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

Steven was an accomplished physician, practicing Radiology in Fairfield County, CT for more than 30 years. Born in Bronx, NY, he always considered himself a "Bronx Boy," even long after he moved to the suburbs of Connecticut. Despite being from the Bronx, he was true die-hard Mets fan and never missed a game. The only thing Steven loved more than good food and wine was his adoring family and he will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Karen, daughters Dana Bernstein (Daniel) and Alyssa Lavy (Daniel) and his cherished granddaughters, Olivia Bernstein and Emma Lavy.

Services were held on Wednesday, October 20, 2021 at The Conservative Synagogue of Westport Cemetery, 250 Reid Street Fairfield, CT. Shiva will be observed at the Cohen residence. To the Editor,

I am writing in support of the candidacy of Jonathan Steinberg and Candice Savin for Westport First Selectmen.

For the past fifteen years, I have personally witnessed how selflessly and tirelessly both Jonathan and Candi have worked to promote a healthy, safe, and vibrant Westport. They’ve worked successfully on issues ranging from education to the environment, from consideration of the needs of our seniors to taking care of our many public services and resources. They have served for years as public servants and always put the needs of their constituents first. Jonathan and Candi are hard-working and clear-headed. They are consensus builders and enthusiastic stewards of all that we value about our town.

They have my vote on Election Day and I hope they have yours.
