Fore! Longshore Season Begins next Friday, Town Announces
WestportLocal.com file photoWestport Parks & Recreation:Parks and Recreation Director Jennifer Fava announced today that the anticipated opening date for the Longshore Golf Course is Friday, March 25, weather permitting.
Ms. Fava states, “We are looking forward to the 2022 golf season. Our Head Golf Professional Jon Janik, and our Golf Course Superintendent Brad Brown have been working hard to make sure the pro shop, staff, and course are ready for this new season. We hope you have a great season on the course.”
The golf course website can be found at www.longshoregolfcourse.com. Note that the Pro Shop phone number is (203) 221-0900. For day of play tee times, please call (203) 226-9785. The Halfway House concession will open Friday, April 1.

Metro North Announces Expanded Service with More Express Trains
MTA: The Metro-North Railroad recently announced it will expand service and restore some express trains, including the addition of 34 new trains along the New Haven line. Weekday service will be restored to 89% of pre-pandemic levels and new train service will reduce trip times for a number of commuters. This is great news for many Connecticut commuters, especially those traveling regularly to and from New York City, said State Senator Will Haskell (D-Westport), Senate Chair of the Transportation Committee.
"As more commuters head back to the city, it's clear that the demand for public transit grows each day,” said Sen. Haskell. “The need for quality public transit is especially urgent in light of rising gas prices. While this new schedule isn't a full return to regular service, this is a significant step forward for commuters in my district. These new trains will provide a level of convenience that my constituents have sorely missed."
“Whether for work or play, adding more trains saves valuable time for commuters and encourages more people to return to rail service,” said Connecticut Department of Transportation Commissioner Joseph Giulietti. “The Department of Transportation continues working with its partners to enhance services and make trains faster for riders today and into the future.”
Metro-North's expansion of services sees the restoration of pre-pandemic zoned express-service trains, which offer increased seating capacity and reduce trip times by up to 13 minutes. Of special note, the "Yankee Clipper," providing game-day train service directly to Yankee Stadium for all New York Yankees home games, will be in service, just as Major League Baseball recently confirmed its 2022 season will move forward. The New Haven Line in particular will see train service grow to 278 lines per week.

Staples High School Celebrates March Students of the Month; “the ‘glue‘ of the Staples community”

The Students of the Month award program recognizes students who help make Staples High School a welcoming place for their peers and teachers alike. They are the “glue” of the Staples community: the type of kind, cheerful, hard-working, trustworthy students that keep the high school together, making it the special place that it is.
Students of the month are nominated by their teachers, who are asked to think of those students who come to school regularly, are friendly to the staff and to fellow students, and make positive contributions in class as well as the Staples community. In short, these students are all-around good citizens of our school. Students of the Month are not necessarily star athletes, high honor students, or lead performers, and even if they are, this award recognizes the positive attitude they bring to school every day in making Staples High School a genial place in which to learn and teach.
Dr. Leonard Flom, 94, Died; Medical Pioneer, Army Medical Corps Veteran
Leonard Flom – an internationally known ophthalmologist, medical pioneer and inductee in the National Inventors Hall of Fame – died on Tuesday at Norwalk Hospital. He was 94
The son of Polish immigrants Murray and Pauline Flom of Brooklyn, New York, Dr. Flom entered New York University at the age of 16 and went on to receive a medical degree from the NYU School of Medicine where he studied ophthalmology and was certified as an ophthalmic surgeon. He then became a first lieutenant in the United States Army Medical Corps and was stationed in Trieste, Italy during the Korean war conflict.
Following his service, Dr. Flom founded a private medical practice and surgical center in Fairfield, Connecticut and served the Fairfield County community for nearly 50 years. Dr. Flom, along with academic colleague Dr. Aaron Safir, conceptualized and ultimately patented their idea for an iris identification system and co-founded IriScan. Today, this biometric is considered to be one of the most accurate in the field of biometric identification. He taught and worked at a number of New York and Connecticut universities and hospitals and remained a member of the faculty of the NYU School of Medicine after retiring from practice. Dr. Flom served on the Ethics Committee of the Connecticut Medical Examining Board, was actively engaged in the activities of the Y’s Men of Westport-Weston and was a regularly featured guest speaker at Camp Invention. His passions included politics, photography, humor, and faith.
Dr. Flom is survived by his wife of 74 years Marilyn Flom, his children Cherie Quain, Jonathan Flom, Sara Goldstein and Rachel Chason, his 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He will be laid to rest at Mt. Hebron Cemetery in Flushing, New York.
