Russell G. Slayback, 85, Died; Greens Farms Resident
Russell G. Slayback - 85, of Greens Farms, died peacefully in the arms of his daughters and long-time caretaker, Monica, on June 20th.
Russ was born on September 19th, 1936, in New York, New York, to Russell B. Slayback and Doris (Dolly) E. Gardner. He earned a B.S. degree in geology from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1959. By 1960, Russ began work as a hydrogeologist for Leggette, Brashears & Graham Inc. (LBG), where he later became Vice President and Director before ultimately ascending to President and Chairman of the Board. Russ also worked to expand the scope of geoscience through his volunteerism. He held twenty different positions at the American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG), including as the national president. In addition, Russ served in several positions at the American Geosciences Institute (AGI), including as the foundation's chairman and the president of the Institute.
While in his role as Chairman at AGI, Russ championed the creation of the endowed AGI Fisher Congressional Fellowship. Russ also sat on the University of Texas at Austin Jackson School Geology Foundation Advisory Council, rising to the chairman. Russ was honored with many awards throughout his career, with some of the most notable being the AIPG Martin Van Covering Award, the AIPG Ben H. Parker Medal, the William B. Heroy Jr. Award for Distinguished Service to AGI, the AGI Medal in Memory of Ian Campbell, and the Russell G. Slayback Award of the AIPG Northeast section.
Russ joins his beloved Judy, the light of his life, who he has missed dearly. He is survived by his daughters, Leigh Reed of Highland, Maryland, and Lynn Sikora of Manassas, Virginia, and his four adored grandchildren, Derek and Kelly Sikora, and Taylor and Dana Reed. He was also blessed with a cherished son-in-law, Rob Reed. Russ is also survived by his dear sister, Ava Burkard.
Russ' family will receive friends at the Harding Funeral Home, 210 Post Rd. E., Westport, Saturday, June 25th from 2:30 to 5:00 pm. No flowers, please. Memorial contributions in honor of Russ may be sent to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, stjude.org/onlinegiving

Rally On Sunday In Westport To Protest Recent Supreme Court Rulings
As most everyone knows by now, the United States Supreme Court has issued two of it’s most substantial rulings in years this week on both the issue of gun rights and abortion rights. As has been the case many times recently under such circumstances the Ruth Steinkraus Cohen Memorial Bridge in downtown Westport will again be the scene of a protest demonstration. In light of the passion of both sides of each issue it is more likely than not that there will be a large number of demonstrators. The even is on Sunday,June 26th beginning at 11:00 AM. Those heading to downtown Westport that day should be prepared for some possible congestion.

Governor Ned Lamont today released the following statement on the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which overturns the landmark protections on reproductive rights that were prescribed nearly 50 years ago in Roe v. Wade:
“Today’s Supreme Court decision drastically oversteps the constitutional right for Americans to make their own reproductive healthcare decisions without government interference. Decisions on reproductive healthcare should only be made between a patient and their doctor without the interference of politicians. This ruling will not only result in a patchwork of unequal laws among the states, but more importantly it will result in dangerous and life-threatening situations similar to what this country witnessed countless times in the era prior to the landmark Roe case in which women died or were left severely injured because they could not access the medical care that they should have every right to access on their own.
“I am grateful to live in Connecticut, where our laws make it clear that women have a right to choose. As long as I am governor, reproductive rights will be protected in Connecticut and I will do everything in my power to block laws from being passed that restrict those rights.”
In May, Governor Lamont signed Public Act 22-19, a first-in-the-nation law that protects medical providers and patients seeking abortion care in Connecticut who may be traveling from other states that have outlawed abortion. Additionally, the law expands abortion access in Connecticut by expanding the type of practitioners eligible to perform certain abortion-related care.
