“Racist Graffiti” Found at Compo Basketball Court; Westport Police Investigating

First Selectwoman Jennifer Tooker and Police Chief Foti Koskinas made the following statement today regarding racist graffiti that was found on Town property:
Late last evening, Parks & Recreation employees, in the course of their routine duties, discovered racist graffiti on the basketball courts at Compo Beach.
These employees immediately contacted their supervisor and the Westport Police Department. The Police Department responded, documented the evidence, and opened an investigation, which is ongoing.
The offensive graffiti was removed and the basketball courts were cleaned and opened for recreational play as of 7:00 AM this morning.
First Selectwoman Tooker stated, “In my short term in office, I have repeatedly talked about ensuring that Westport is a community where everyone feels like they belong. This incident runs completely contrary to that goal and is inexcusable.”
She continued, “I am grateful to the Parks & Recreation Department employees and the Police Department for the swift action they took to address the situation professionally and respectfully.”

Westport COVID-19 Cases Up 22; State Positivity Rate, Hospitalizations Up
The State Department of Public Health reported 22 more COVID-19 cases in Westport over the past day. The State positivity rate was up to 11.52% while hospitalizations were up to 318 patients.
Westport total positive or probable cases: 5,541 cases.

Westport Man Arrested after Leaving Guns Unsecured in Car; Guns Subsequently Stolen
Westport Police Department:
On May 28, 2022, at approximately 8:50 p.m., Westport Police officers responded to 371 Post Road East on a report of a larceny from a motor vehicle. The complainant, Frank Seccurra, stated that a short time earlier multiple firearms were stolen from his vehicle. He said that at the time of the theft he believed that the car was locked. It is alleged that Mr. Seccurra did not properly secure the firearms in his vehicle and therefore a warrant for his arrest was completed and signed by a Superior Court judge.
On the afternoon of July 20, 2022, Mr. Seccurra turned himself in at the Westport Police Department. Per the warrant, he was charged with Improper Storage of a Firearm in a Motor Vehicle. Mr. Seccurra was released after posting a $25,000.00 bond and is scheduled to be arraigned at Stamford Superior Court on August 5.
The theft of the guns is still under investigation.

The State Department of Public Health reported 10 more COVID-19 cases and one COVID-19 related death in Westport over the past day. The State positivity rate was up to 11.44% while hospitalizations were down to 296 patients.

News 12: “Wrong-way crash kills 2 on Route 8; Westport Mother Remembered”
Friends and relatives of a mother from Westport who was killed in a crash in Bridgeport Sunday are mourning her loss.
Monica Wilson was a mother of three who grew up in the colonial village neighborhood in Norwalk. She had recently moved to Westport.
Police say she was driving on Route 8 near Exit 2 when a van going the wrong way struck her.
Four vehicles were involved in the crash. Wilson and one other person were killed. Five others were injured.
Wilson’s friend James Dupree remembered her as a “beautiful person.”
“She always opened her arms. She always said ‘hello.’ She never had attitude about anything. She was special. She was just very special,” said Dupree.
News 12 was told that Wilson’s two sons were pulled from her vehicle and are expected to survive.
Fire Department: Car Flips Over, Crashes through Fence off Wilton Road
At just after 5:30 today, first responders were dispatched to the area of Wilton Road near Cross Brook Lane for the report of a motor vehicle accident with a vehicle rolled over. Upon arrival of emergency services, a vehicle was found to have lost control and left the roadway, rolling over a stone wall and into an adjacent fence. Wilton Road was shut down between Newtown Turnpike and Marilane for a short time while the scene was active. No reports on what caused the accident or if any injuries were suffered.
