On Friday Jim Himes and Jahana Hays were joined by local officials and other cycling enthusiasts on a bike ride which began with a press conference at Roger's Park in Danbury and ended at Weston's Bisceglie Park. The mission of the ride was to bring awareness to the benefits of the newly enacted Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) passed with the support of both members of Congress. They were joined there by CT Department of Transportation Commissioner Carlo Leone, and the Connecticut Construction Industries Association to explain provisions of the IIJA relating to transportation.

They made several stops along the 14 mile route from Danbury through Bethel, traveling along scenic Route 53 which winds past the Saugatuck Reservoir in Redding and Weston. Their first stop was in Bethel at Holbrook Farm Market, part of the small family farm which offers local products in addition to their own fresh produce, encouraging area residents to shop local and support Connecticut's farming industry.

After a brief pause at the Redding Roadhouse the next stop was at the Saugatuck Universal Access Trail meeting Redding First Selectwoman Julia Pemberton who joined the ride and where Himes was interviewed by News 12. From there the final leg of the ride ended in Weston at Bisceglie Park where they met with Weston First Selectwoman Samantha Nestor to continue the discussion on infrastructure and passive recreation.

Staples Wreckers Girls Dominate Danbury Field Hockey, 8-1

The Staples Field Hockey Team during the playing of the National Anthem before the start of Friday’s game against Danbury

Staples girls controlled the game Thursday in Danbury from the first moment to the final horn with a powerful offense and a smothering defense that held the Danbury Hatters scoreless until well into the third quarter. The comparatively easy win allowed Coach Tapsall  to give the entire 20 twenty girl squad time on the field. Staples controlled the ball most of the game often taking it back quickly after one or two passes by Danbury, concentrating of quality of set piece play. The game was hard fought and physical by both teams with two brief injury time-outs. Danbury's score came on a nice fast counter attack but they were only able to find the goal once. Said Coach Tapsall "Hopefully [this game] will stand us in good stead for Greenwich game next Tuesday where we will again play on similar slow field turf as opposed to our home turf which is much faster.

Scoring was led by Tyla Ozgen and Charlotte Strange who each scored two goals and Isabelle Nahon, Sofia Fidalgo, Emma Larit, Alex Hackett each added one goal to the Wrekcers total of 8 goals. Sofia Fidalgo led with assists with 3 and one assist each was credited to Adela Ardrey , Charlotte Strange, Chloe Hackett, and Emma Nahon. Staples travels to Greenwich on Tuesday to face the Cardinals.

Governor Directs Flags to Half-staff on Sunday to Honor National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service

Governor Ned Lamont today announced that he is directing U.S. and state flags in Connecticut lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Sunday, October 9, 2022, in recognition of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service, an observance honoring the sacrifices of firefighters who have died in the line of duty. The nationwide recognition occurs annually during Fire Prevention Week.

Accordingly, since no flag should fly higher than the U.S. flag, all other flags – including state, municipal, corporate, or otherwise – should also be lowered during this same duration of time.

Governor Lamont said, “Firefighters are heroes, who dedicate their careers to the protection of our communities and the safety of those who live in them. They put themselves in danger on a moment’s notice, at times putting their own lives in danger to shield others. We owe it to them to honor their fearlessness. I am thankful to all of the firefighters in Connecticut, and I encourage everyone to reflect upon those firefighters who have given their lives in the line of duty.”

Lt. Governor Susan Bysiewicz said, “Today, we honor those brave firefighters who gave the ultimate sacrifice after dedicating their lives to serving their communities. We are incredibly grateful for their service, and I hope we can all take a moment to honor the courageous souls who were taken too soon. We send love and strength to their families, friends, and fellow firefighters.”
