Firefighters use oil absorbent on a leaking liquid.

At around 2:00 PM today Westport firefighters responded to the I-95 in the southbound lanes, just south of Hales Road, for the reported tractor trailer accident with a possible fuel leak.

The accident shut down the right and center lanes and warranted the Fairfield County Hazardous Materials truck to respond to the scene. Heavy traffic from the incident resulted in a near shut down of I-95 southbound, with many motorists getting off at exit 18 to attempt their luck at taking the Westport streets. Greens Farms Road quickly slowed to a stop, with cars backing up from Bridge Street until Hillspoint Road.

No word on injuries, what caused the accident, or any confirmation on the hazardous material spilled.
