Staples Girls Soccer In The State Tournament Finals!!

On a chilly Tuesday night in Trumbull the Wrecker girls controlled the the game all night in their CIAC state tournament semi-final match against Fairfield Ward. After a slow start this season, Staples has won 14 of 15 games since they played Warde during the regular season explained Head Coach Barry Beattie who adds "We have won 9 of those games by a one goal margin". They tied against St. Joe's who finished the season 15-1. Now, after defeating Warde in a tough, very physical game which saw both teams banging and slamming for 40 minutes with more than a few players hitting the deck the Wrecker girls face the Wilton Warriors. Team leader Gaby Gonzalez scored the only goal for either team about 9 minutes into the game, and keeper Camie Koleck made 5 great saves, including a stop of the Warriors last chance to tie with 16 seconds left on the clock.

These two teams met last for the FCIAC title which now belongs to the Staples girls after they scored another shut-out.

Senior Gaby Gonzalez leads this team which is a mix of starters including 1 freshman, 4 sophomores, 3 juniors and 3 seniors. Said Beattie, "The have had to dig deep, play with heart and play in new positions. It's their determination and grit that has been able to bring them to the brink of a state title". The Wreckers will fight for the state championship againt Wilton on Saturday, November 20 at Dillon Stadium, 250 Huyshope Ave, Hartford.
