Staples Swim & Diving Team Defeated By Ridgefield
Staples Wreckers swimming & diving team competing against the Ridgefield Tigers.
Staples swimmers lost a tough dual meet to perennial powerhouse Ridgefield Friday, 103-72.
Staples was hindered by the absence of some key swimmers recovering from Covid, but still managed some strong swims against some of the top swimmers in the state.
Juniors Riley Twiss and Peter Meehan led the Wreckers with wins in the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke, respectively. Both times were personal bests, and Riley's time would have set a pool record at the Staples pool. Twiss also was second in the 200 freestyle, one of the closest races of the day - he was just edged out by Ridgefield's Jack Clancy. Meehan who also won the 100 breaststroke against Norwalk on Wednesday, dropped an additional two seconds from that swim during his swim Friday.
Senior captain Brendan McGinley swam a personal best time in the 200 freestyle, taking 3rd, and notched another personal best in the 100 butterfly, finishing 5th. The Staples 200 & 400 freestyle relays of : Twiss, Jacob Lee, Josh Tanksley, and Andrew Berkowitz finished 2nd in both events, in very close races - barely getting touched out in the 200. Lee, another senior captain, was 3rd in the 50 freestyle, and Tanksley scored 4th place points in the 100 free.
Staples divers, who although they were uncontested as Ridgfeield had no divers competing, still dove well. Derek Amlicke, a sophomore won the event, and Brendan Corneck another sophomore was second with a personal best score of 191.95
Although the score favored Ridgefield, Coach Todd Gordon was pleased with his team's effort. "We've been putting in some hard practices over the last few weeks, and it's rewarding to see the boys swim the times they did while their bodies are tired. The progress of some of our younger and newer swimmers is encouraging, and bodes well for our championship meets at the end of the season."
