Poplar Plains Brook Responsible for Thursday’s Newtown Turnpike Flooding

The Poplar Plains Brook was responsible for the closure of Newtown Turnpike on Thursday, its waters breaching the roadway and flowing across it towards nearby wetlands. The brook passes underneath the roadway between Heron Lake Lane and Twin Oaks Lane, but a recent bout of rain saturated wetlands and smaller streams nearby, all of which apparently added to the brook’s volume. According to maps, the brook begins near Route 33 and terminates in Lees Pond, between Sylvan Road North and Woodside Avenue.
