Staples Freshmen Girls Soccer Surfs the Blue Wave after Winning over Darien 3-2

The Staples High School Girls’ Soccer Team battled Darien this morning on Wakeman’s turf field - with a close game coming to an end with a final winning score of 3-2 for the freshman team and their coach, Jack Tubbs.

Goals were scored by Chloe Barnes (#46), Kaela Cohen (#42) , and Ella Zhu (#40). The back line, featuring Lucy Barney (#3), Julianna Martire (#20), Stella St. Andre (#14 ), and Lucy Fisher (#18) held strong through the second half while Katie Fitzgerald (#32) lead the attack in midfield.

Freshman Breaks another Record as Staples Swim and Dive Team Pushes through Season

Last night’s Staples Girls Swim & Dive Team meet was close, with “Another record shattered” reports Susana De Pinho.

Staples HS Girls swim team improved to 3-2 on the season with a hard fought win over Westhill/Stamford. The meet came down to the final event with Staples finishing first in the 400 meter freestyle relay with a time of 4:10.46 to secure the win.

Highlights of the meet include another record setting swim by freshman Annam Olasewere in the 50 meter free with a time of 26.15 beating her 26.48 record swim from last week. Olasewere also won the 100 meter free in a time of 59.38.

Staples senior captain Jessica Qi won the 200m freestyle (2:15.26) and 400m freestyle (4:50.68). Freshman Dani Schwartz took second in the 400m freestyle with a time of 4:55.30.

Co-Captain Ella Alpert won the 100m butterfly (1:09.07) and placed second in the 100m backstroke (1:10.68).

Freshman Ayann Olasewere and sophomore Libby Turner took first and second in the 200m IM (2:34.97 and 2:37.39). Olasewere won the 100 meter breaststroke (1:20.64) and Turner took third (1:32.37).

Staples divers Kate Whitaker, Mia Guster and Emma Thaw took 3rd, 4th and 5th respectively against a very competitive Westhill/Stamford team.



Next up for the Wreckers is Friday night's meet at home vs Greenwich.

Local Runners Pick up the Baton for The Great American Relay from Boston to California

Beginning on September 11th to honor those lost to the World Trade Center attacks, the Great American Relay is making its way from Boston to Santa Monica, California to raise money for first responders and members of the military.

Volunteer runners make their way towards Westport with The Great American Relay batons. 

Monday’s schedule brought the relay from Branford, Connecticut to the World Trade Center Memorial in Lower Manhattan in ten separate stages - with stages 26 and 27 connecting at Westport Fire Department Headquarters at around 10:30 yesterday morning.

Local runners who volunteered to carry the baton from Bridgeport Fire Department Headquarters to its handoff in Westport were: J Lucas, Nancy Wilson, Kelly Konstanty, Lisa Goldstein, Karla Cohen, Lauren Leppla, Kenji Ogawa, and Lead Runner Ken Gallagher. The group handed the baton off to Barbara Campbell, Elizabeth Hofmann, and Lead Runner Jeffrey Wollman who carried it to Darien’s hand-off point.

In total, 58 runners helped get the baton from Branford to the World Trade Center Memorial by Monday night.

This morning the red baton will continue its journey West - with an expected arrival at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania’s City Hall late tonight with the help of several dozen more volunteers. By the time the baton reaches that West Coast - it will have traveled through 415 stages totaling 3,500 miles for nearly 40 days with the help of hundreds of volunteer runners.

Wreckers Soccer Wins Season Opener

The Wreckers defeated rival Ridgefield 4-0. Goals were scored by Mario Moreno, Reese Watkins, Dylan Hoke, Matt Shackelford and Jaden Mueller. Assists by Ryan Thomas (2), Jaden Mueller, Jack Foster, Marius Ekeberger with excellent goalkeeping by Jacob Greenberger.
