Documentary Photographer, Former Westporter to Give Lecture on Cuba Travels

Contributed photo.
Press Release:

International documentary photographer, Daryl Hawk, will present a photo documentary and lecture entitled “Into the Heart of Cuba” to the Appalachian Mountain Club on Tuesday, September 13th at 6:30PM. This special event will take place at the Saugatuck Congregational Church, 245 Post Road East in Westport.

Daryl was one of the first Americans to travel alone without any restrictions and unlimited access to all areas. Riding in a 1953 Chevrolet for 2 weeks, he fell in love with this unique country within hours of his arrival. “The visual stimulation that I experienced from dawn to dusk was truly exhilarating.  I have never seen such a perfect combination of beautiful light, color and the friendliest and most welcoming people in all of my travels. Explorers all have stories to tell. Mine is told through the lens of a camera. I am a visual explorer.”

Daryl has made six trips to Cuba between 2016 – 2022. He started his Cuba journeys in the capital of Havana where the day to day street life and architecture was his main focus. He then made his way to the rural Vinales region which is world renowned for tobacco plantations. From there he continued to head east through the cities of Cinfuegos, Trinidad, Santa Clara, Camaguay, Santiago de Cuba and Baracoa, the most eastern point in Cuba. The stunning architecture, colorful cars from the 1950s, remote caves, environmental portraits of people from all walks of life, and dramatic landscapes are all covered in the presentation.

Daryl travels to Cuba with the goal of shooting documentaries for magazines and television and will share his nonstop, day to day adventures, experiences, discoveries, and valuable lessons he learned on these incredibly spiritual journeys. He will discuss his style, philosophy, and various techniques he uses when photographing subject matter. Equipment, lighting on location, environmental portraits, and travel tips on planning a trip to Cuba will all be covered as well.

For the past thirty years, Daryl has explored some of the most remote and isolated places in the world telling stories with his camera. He is a photographer, travel writer, lecturer, and explorer whose articles and photographs often appear in numerous national magazines and publications worldwide. He is a member of the Explorers Club, a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and member of the Professional Photographers Association. He has been featured several times on NBC’s “Today Show” and Fox 5 television.

Daryl owns and operates “Unconventional Travelers”, a small personalized tour company that focuses on inspiring travelers to the world in a new way by experiencing first hand other cultures and lifestyles. These stimulating photographic explorations inspire and connect people with some of the world’s most beautiful places.   For information on trips for 2022 and 2023 to Cuba  www.unconventionaltravelers.com

He is the author of five published photography books. “Distant Journeys” consists of 150 color images from the Arctic, the Andes, Patagonia, Antarctica, Bhutan, New Zealand, and much more. “Quiet Moments” includes Hawk’s favorite 120 black and white photographs taken over the past 25 years. Nature and nautical landscapes and abstracts, New York City scenes, and misc. travel landscapes and portraits are all highlighted. “White Pond” is a tribute to a small lake in southern New Hampshire. “Manhattan”, is a color retrospective with 200 landscapes, buildings and street scenes of New York City. His latest book, “Into the Heart of Cuba” consists of 450 images from his recent circumnavigation around Cuba.

Daryl is also the former host and producer of the television show “The Unconventional Traveler” which featured some of the worlds’ leading explorers, travel photographers and filmmakers sharing their work from various expeditions and documentaries. He produced over 100 shows over a 10 year period and some of his guests included Jane Goodall, Buzz Aldrin, Reinhold Messner and George Schaller.

Westport’s Oscar Edelman Grabs Gold in Israel during The 2022 Maccabiah

Westporter Oscar Edelman brought home gold for the United States with his basketball skills and pride in his heritage at the 2022 Maccabi Games in Israel. Edelman and Maccabi USA won the final basketball game against Israel during the international sporting event that brought 10,000 athletes and high ranking leaders, such as President Joe Biden and Israel alternate Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, together for competition and celebration. The games celebrate Jewish heritage and tradition, something Edelman has enjoyed both on the courts in Israel and here at Westport’s Greens Farms Academy. GFA’s John Nash spoke with Edelman last year after learning that he’d been selected for the team, with Edelman telling him “I’m usually the only Jewish kid when I play and now I’m playing with kids wearing yarmulkes, which was really cool.” Edelman comes from a family of Jewish athletes, including his mother - who was also invited to the Maccabi games - his grandfather who was a tennis player, and great grandfather who also excelled in basketball, according to GFA. Edelman was back home today and was celebrated by the local & State community leadership for his gold medal and hard work. Contributed photo.

Staples Student Spends Summer Exploring the Universe

Press Release

Over 39 intense days this summer, Rebecca Schussheim of Westport, a  student at Staples High School, operated a research-grade telescope to take images of a  near-earth asteroid, then calculated its orbital path, including the chance it will impact  Earth in the future. She gained hands-on experience with vector calculus, physics, astronomy, and programming in Python.

Schussheim participated in the Summer Science Program (SSP), joining some of the world’s  most promising science students for academic challenge, collaboration, and personal  growth. Since 1959, this unique and highly selective program has offered teenagers their  first taste of hands-on, authentic experimental research. Years and even decades later,  alumni describe it as “the educational experience of a lifetime.” Most go on to earn  advanced degrees and leadership roles in their chosen careers.

Schussheim and her colleagues spent over 300 hours collecting and analyzing data in teams  of three, overseen by experienced researchers. They also had the opportunity to hear from  and interact with prominent guest speakers.

SSP is operated by an independent non-profit, in cooperation with its host campuses: Indiana University Bloomington, New Mexico Tech, Purdue University, University of  Colorado Boulder, University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, and academic affiliates: Caltech,  MIT, and Harvey Mudd College. Westport Doctor named Runner-Up for Chris Klug Foundation Award

Press Release

Westporter Dr. Karin Hehenberger. Photo by Nordic Life Science News

The Chris Klug Foundation (CKF) would like to announce the winners, and runners-up of their 2022 Bounce Back Give Back Awards. The annual award recognizes two organ transplant recipients who exhibit an outstanding quality of life post-transplant, whether through career accomplishments, participation in sports or hobbies, or simply leading fulfilling lives with their family and loved ones.

“The Bounce Back, Give Back Award inspires transplant recipients across the country and encourages individuals to register as organ donors to save lives” Anna Morgan-Palardy Program and Communications Coordinator at CKF. These individuals have not only shown the determination to bounce back from transplantation but a passion for giving back to the transplant community and helping others through the process.

CKF received 34 nominations representing individuals from 11 states for this year’s award. The CKF board reviews all of these applications deciding on two award winners. These two honorees will enjoy an all-expenses-paid trip to Aspen with one guest each for one of our annual celebration of life events. Winners will be honored during the summer Wine and Dine event, an evening of sensational wine, delicious food, and fabulous music in honor of organ donation. The winners will also be honored at our annual Summit For Life in December, where athletes from all over the United States take on Aspen’s 3,267 vertical feet in a race to the top!

Westport, CT, local Dr. Karin Hehenberger was among the three runners-up for this year's award. CKF is honored to acknowledge and celebrate Karin’s dedication to the transplant community across the country.

Just before her 17th birthday Dr. Hehenberger was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D); she continued with her life with this diagnosis becoming an executive with Johnson and Johnson responsible for Metabolic strategy. However, in 2008 her diagnosis caught up with her, and it became apparent that she would need a kidney transplant. So in 2009, Karin’s father donated his kidney to her saving her life! Dr. Hehenberger joined the leadership team of the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation after her transplant with two goals in mind. One to improve the quality of life for T1D patients and two to find a cure for T1D. In 2010 her health began to fail again until she received the gift of life through a pancreas transplant from a deceased donor.

Before her transplant, Karin represented Sweden in several European Tennis Competitions. Though her health dashed her dreams of playing professional tennis, she continues to play regularly, ensuring she keeps a happy and healthy post-transplant. Dr. Hehenberger has been in the healthcare industry for over 15 years, working to advance the healthcare system and help support those with chronic illnesses. She is the scientific advisor to the CEO of Helsinn and sits on the boards of the Lighthouse Foundation and the Rolf Luft Diabetes Research Foundation.

Dr. Hehenberger founded Lyfebulb to reduce the burden of chronic disease through the power of the patient. Lyfebulb focuses on three areas, connectivity, education, and innovation, to help patients through the process of chronic disease. Karin and her team recently launched TransplantLyfe, which holds educational seminars and provides a support network for those within the transplant community. Dr. Hehenberger has been a keynote speaker at numerous national and international conferences and events, including being a featured speaker at the annual Nobel Symposium at the Karolinska Institute.

Karin will represent the Chris Klug Foundation as a Patient Ambassador visiting transplant centers, schools, colleges, and more and help further the cause of organ, eye, and tissue donation. CKF is honored to be celebrating Dr. Karin Hehenberger and the other transplant recipients nominated for this award. To learn more about CKF’s 2022 Bounce Back Give Back Award Winners, follow us at @chrisklugfoundation or head to our website www.chrisklugfoundation.org

Oscar’s Deli Mural provides Company during Light Lunch Rush

The mural as shown in the background of this photo taken on Oscar's last day of business. “Some of the Oscar regulars gathered at the deli for the last time today.” Photo by Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

With howling winds and snowfall outside, Rye Ridge Deli’s grills remained hot as one of the only places serving meals in the community during the storm. The lunch rush today was on the lighter side - however, the lunch crowd of 1982 remains steadfast as the original Oscar’s mural, painted by Pamela Markoya, sits above the booths.

Oscar’s Deli, a Main Street mainstay, closed its doors in 2016 after 46 years of service. Oscar’s owner and community member Lee Papageorge made the hard decision to close while battling illness, his family announcing August 1st, 2016 as the final day of operation. The community lost Lee just nine days later.

That Winter, Rye Ridge Deli operators - who have locations in Rye Brook, NY and Stamford - began renovations to the space and opened Rye Ridge Deli in the historic Main Street storefront in 2017.

The tradition of Oscar’s was not lost on the new owners. Markoya’s mural was pulled from the Oscar’s wall and placed onto the wall of the new deli as a nod to Lee and the team of regulars who frequented the deli counter or passed by the landmark barber chair for their usual lunch orders. A part of Westport community’s history, the mural includes handwritten names of those captured by the artist - allowing Lee to continue to watch over even the slowest of lunch services, even during snow storms like today’s.
