Air Quality Alert from Smoke, Thunderstorm Alerts Announced by the National Weather Service
The National Weather Service, NYC has announced that “there is potential for a few strong to severe thunderstorms, with strong to damaging winds gusts, Tuesday evening ahead of an approaching cold front.”
The hazardous weather outlook includes an Air Quality Alert for the county that stands until 11:00 this evening, with smoke plumes still hovering over the community. “Fine particulates from the departing wildfire smoke plume have been slow to disperse and unhealthy levels are expected to persist throughout the day. An air quality action day means that particulate matter within the region may approach or exceed unhealthy standards. 1.3 Million Acres Burning in the West Cause Rapid Afternoon Air Quality Drop, Haze over Westport
Smoke plumes depicted on the AirNow database late today. Wildfires in the North Western United States and South Western Canada have sent smoke plumes across the continent, clouding Westport skies and hazing over the horizons as the Interagency Wildland Fire Air Quality Response Program reported unhealthy air quality and active smoke plumes in the area, drastically increasing air pollutants throughout the day Tuesday.
During what was supposed to be a clear, sunny day in the community - the Connecticut DEEP Bridgeport air quality measurement device registered a rapid increase in the pollutants in the air over the area, jumping from just 8 micrograms per cubic meter at 8:00 AM, to 77.8 micrograms/cubic meter by 8:00 PM today.
The smoke plumes have been hovering over the tri-state area, with southern New York, northern New Jersey, and Western Connecticut experiencing the brunt of the poor air quality. According to data from the AirNow program, the smoke plume over the area is heaviest over Westport, with its outer bands reaching over Long Island and ending just prior to West Hampton.
AirNow reports that the air quality is stable, but advices high risk individuals to limit time outdoors and monitor for signs of illness. Smoke from the fires will continue for the immediate future, as over 1.3 million acres were reported as burning in the July 20th Incident Management Situation report, with the Northwest fire region accounting for 550,098 burning acres in Montana and nearby states. 19,347 fire personnel were reported as battling the blazes as of Tuesday.

Storm Report: Westport Prepares for Tropical Storm Elsa

Tropical Storm Elsa will reach the area during the overnight hours. Heavier bands of rain are forecasted to begin just after midnight and last through noon tomorrow, with chances of rain continuing through midnight Saturday morning. Winds are forecast to be strongest between 5 and 10 tomorrow morning, with gusts of 30 mph or more possible. Elsa has produced tornadoes in most southeastern states as it makes its way north, so tornado activity and water spouts are possible. Lighting is a threat throughout the night and into tomorrow, with several lighting strikes hitting Westport Thursday afternoon.

Residents are urged to stay off of the roadways for the morning hours, keep devices charged with batteries nearby, and to assure that all outdoor furniture and decorations are properly secured. The heat index for tomorrow afternoon will reach 90 degrees, so keeping homes cool and keeping window shades drawn and doors/windows closed may assist in keeping homes cool in the event of power outages.
Boat owners are urged to check that all bimini and fabric tops are closed and secured, all deck items - pillows, PFDs, or other items - are stowed away, and that bilge pumps are working. With forecasts predicting 2”-3” of rain, bilge pumps will be running more than usual, and could cause batteries to die, turning the pumps off and putting boats at risk of flooding. Checking on your vessel before and after the storm will prove important.
Children who have been sent away to summer camps are urged to worry about nothing, as they shouldn’t have much electricity and technology anyways.

From the National Weather Service, NYC: Tropical Storm Elsa will move toward the area this evening passing near or over the Mid Atlantic coast late tonight, and near or over eastern Long Island and southeast New England on Friday morning. The main threats from Elsa are heavy rain capable of producing flash flooding, tropical storm force winds especially along the south shore of Long Island and across southeast Connecticut, and associated marine and coastal hazards, including very rough seas and dangerous rip currents. A widespread rainfall of 2 to 4 inches with locally higher amounts is forecast from this evening into Friday. The highest amounts are forecast to be from NYC to the north and west. Dangerous marine conditions should also develop on the ocean waters south of Long Island, as well as on Long Island Sound, and the south shore and eastern bays of Long Island. Tropical storm force winds will be most likely in those areas, near the south shores of Long Island and southeast Connecticut, and in some higher elevations away from the coastline. Dangerous rip currents will likely occur along the ocean beaches of Long Island.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS.
A Heat Advisory is issued when the combination of heat and humidity is expected to make it feel like it is 95 to 99 degrees for two or more consecutive days, or 100 to 104 degrees for any length of time.
Seniors and those with chronic health problems or mental health conditions are at an increased risk.
Homes without air conditioning can be much hotter than outdoor temperatures. Use air conditioning to stay cool at home or go to a place that has air conditioning. Check on vulnerable friends, family members and neighbors.
To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! In cases of heat stroke call 9 1 1.
