I would like to encourage Westport voters to elect Jennifer Tooker as First Selectperson and Andrea Moore as Second Selectperson on November 2. I have had the pleasure of working closely with Jennifer for a number of years while I was a Board of Finance member and Chairman. They are both highly intelligent, reasoned, competent leaders with extensive business administration and town government experience. Their main objective is to represent the residents of Westport and provide the services necessary and needed, while at the same time being mindful of the impact of the costs on taxes.
As members of the Board of Finance, they have been successful in holding Westport’s tax rate relatively constant, a significant achievement considering the financial problems of other nearby communities and the State of Connecticut. Jennifer Tooker also served on the Board of Education and both are supporters of keeping Westport’s school system as one of the best in the state and region.
A vote for Jennifer Tooker and Andrea Moore is a vote for continuing Westport’s town governmental excellence. Tammy and I urge you to elect these proven managers and leaders as First and Second Selectpersons.

Two Lanes Closed on I-95 due to Car Accident
The State Department of Transportation announced that two lanes of I-95 are closed just after 8:00 PM after an accident in the northbound lanes between exit 16 and 17. No other information has been released.
International Show Jumping Debuts at The Greenwich Polo Club
World class show jumping made its debut Saturday with CSI Greenwich, with $250,000.00 in total prizes attracting an elite group of competitors from around the country, including notable equestrian Georgina Bloomberg, daughter of former NYC mayor Michael Bloomberg who finished in 6th place atop her horse, (of course) Manhattan. Eleven other riders finished the $150,000.00 division 3 Grand Prix, including second place finisher Alex Matz, riding Erdento Van De Leeuwerk bringing home a 30K purse. Nayel Nassar of Egypt, riding Igor Van De Wittemoere finished first in the four horse jump-off and took home $40,500.00. Local competitors included six-time Olympian McLain Ward of Brewster, NY.

Westport Police Department Targets Distracted Driving for the End of October
Westport Police DepartmentThe Westport Police Department is participating in The Connecticut Department of Transportation’s high visibility distracted driving enforcement campaign. In partnership with State and local law enforcement and the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the campaign will increase efforts to enforce distracted-driving laws. This campaign will run from October 15th to October 31st, 2021.
Distracted driving is an activity that diverts attention from driving. Not surprisingly, texting while driving is one of the most dangerous distractions. Sending or reading a text takes one’s eyes off the road for 5 seconds and at 55 m.p.h., that is like driving the entire length of a football field with your eyes closed. Additionally, according to the NHTSA driving a vehicle while texting is six times more dangerous than intoxicated driving.
Operating a motor vehicle requires the driver’s full attention and even a momentary distraction can lead to disastrous results. In Connecticut in 2019, more than 6,600 crashes were contributed to distracted driving and the NHTSA reported that between 2012 and 2019, 26,004 people died in crashes involving a distracted driver.
In addition to the safety risks associated with distracted driving, it can also be costly to violate Connecticut’s distracted-driving laws. Drivers who are ticketed are fined $200.00 for the first offense, $375.00 for the second offense, and $625.00 for the third and subsequent offenses.
The Connecticut Department of Transportation along with the Westport Police urges you to put your phone down when you get behind the wheel. Should you need to use your phone prior to reaching your destination, please pull over to a safe location first.
