Norwalk I-95 Accident, Heavy Fog Slows Morning Commute
An accident on I-95 in Norwalk slowed this morning’s commute. Greens Farms Road, Route 1, and I-95 northbound were all bumper to bumper after the 7:00 O’clock hour. Heavy fog further hindered the drive. No word on injuries or cause of the I-95 accident.
I-95 Truck Accident Stalls Traffic on Highway & Town Streets; Hazardous Material Truck Dispatched
At around 2:00 PM today Westport firefighters responded to the I-95 in the southbound lanes, just south of Hales Road, for the reported tractor trailer accident with a possible fuel leak.
The accident shut down the right and center lanes and warranted the Fairfield County Hazardous Materials truck to respond to the scene. Heavy traffic from the incident resulted in a near shut down of I-95 southbound, with many motorists getting off at exit 18 to attempt their luck at taking the Westport streets. Greens Farms Road quickly slowed to a stop, with cars backing up from Bridge Street until Hillspoint Road.
No word on injuries, what caused the accident, or any confirmation on the hazardous material spilled.
Roads Conditions Deteriorating as Ice & Light Snow Continue; Use Caution
Local roads and side roads are experiencing ice and snowy conditions this evening as temperatures remain low and the snow continues. Town sanders are attempting to keep up with the light accumulations, however roads are being reported as very slippery, especially those covered with light layers of snow.
Major Accident Closes Riverside Avenue after Truck Slams into 2 Parked Cars, Utility Pole
Just after 1:30 PM today, first responders were dispatched to the area of 200-300 Riverside Avenue for the report of the motor vehicle accident involving multiple trucks and a telephone pole. Upon their arrival, the scene described a collision where one truck traveling on Riverside Avenue apparently struck two parked cars in front of Jr’s Deli, coming to a sudden stop after jumping over the sidewalk and striking a utility pole.
The violent crash brought Jr’s Deli staff and customers running outside to see what had happened. One of the deli visitors, who owned one of the vehicles struck, felt relief that the vehicles were unoccupied when struck.
Due to the force of the crash, one vehicle struck had a visible gas leak and a broken rear axle. There is no word on any injuries to the driver, or what caused the accident. The roadway was still closed as of 2:45 PM.
Update: The roadway was re-opened at 2:55 PM. The Westport Fire Department released that one person was transported to the hospital by Westport Emergency Medical Service.
Early Morning House Fire Displaces Three from Bayberry Lane; Required Wilton, Fairfield Firefighters to Respond

The Westport Fire Department Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call shortly after 6:30am this morning by a resident reporting a structure fire. The fire department responded with 4 engines, 1 ladder truck, 1 rescue truck, and 2 shift commanders. First arriving units found a 2 story, 2 family home with fire on the first floor, second floor, and attic. Two attack lines (fire hoses) were stretched and operated to extinguish the fire. Fire companies searched the house for victims and found none as the house had been evacuated prior to the arrival of the fire department.
The residents of the second floor were alerted to the fire by a working carbon monoxide detector and they notified the residents of the first floor to evacuate. No injuries were reported. Three residents have been displaced by the fire.
The fire was investigated by the Westport Fire Marshal’s Office. The Westport Police and EMS responded to assist on scene. The Wilton and Fairfield Fire Departments assisted on scene and with station coverage during the fire.
The Westport Fire Department reminds residents to have working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors on all floors of their homes.
